Meet the band!

Shane, 19, the oldest of the Birtzer brothers, has been playing banjo for about 7 years. He attends Concordia University in St. Paul where he is studying English Education and Theater. He acted in plays throughout high school and has continued this endeavor at CSP with major roles in three plays as a college freshman.

Shane’s younger brother, 17 year old Clint Birtzer, is the 2009 Minnesota State Flatpicking (Guitar) Champion. Clint, along with Jesse, also captured 2nd and 3rd place titles in the MN Duet Singing Championships the past two years. In addition to music, Clint is passionate about The Great Outdoors and hunts as much as music and school allows him. He attends Inver Hills Community College as a post secondary student.

The youngest Birtzer brother, Luke, is now 16 years old and has been fiddling for the last 6 years. A talented song writer and photographer, Luke’s original tune, Sawtooth, gives the band its name. Having been enrolled in an on-line Minnesota charter school, Luke has enjoyed the freedom to travel with his step-dad’s band, Monroe Crossing, to exciting, far-off places with the possibility of great photo ops! On one such trip, The Bell Buckle Bluegrass Cruise, Luke won the "Bluegrass Idol" competition. He will attend Inver Hills Community College as a post secondary student this fall.

The oldest band member, 19 year old Jesse Moravec, was taken to a bluegrass concert at the age of 12 by his parents for a home school outing. Jesse was hooked by the musical style and immediately drawn to the mandolin as his instrument of choice, and he hasn’t put it down since. Also an excellent singer, Jesse, along with Clint, placed 2nd and 3rd the past two years in the MN Duet Singing Championships. When he’s not writing songs or picking, he is studying or working out at the gym in preparation for his next gymnastics meet. He is majoring in Linguistics at the University of Minnesota where he is a member of the Gopher men's gymnastics team.

Jesse’s younger brother, Ethan Moravec, has been a musician for a long time and most recently added the upright bass to his repertoire in order to play bluegrass with Sawtooth. Ethan competes in gymnastics at the national level, and though he competes in fewer events now due to injuries, he keeps his gymnastics schedule busy by coaching. 18 year old Ethan will attend the University of Minnesota this fall majoring in Chemical Engineering.
